About Screen Recorder

Record your screen directly from your browser using the native Screen Capture API — no browser extensions, desktop software, or sign-ups required. Choose to record your entire screen (great for full workflow demonstrations), a specific application window (ideal for focused tutorials), or a single browser tab (perfect for recording web app demos). Optionally include audio from your microphone for narration or voice-over, or capture system audio to record the sounds from your application. Preview the recording before saving to make sure it captured exactly what you need, then download as a WebM file. If you need MP4 format for broader compatibility, use the companion WebM to MP4 converter tool. Common use cases include creating software tutorials and how-to videos, recording bug reproduction steps for development teams, capturing online meeting highlights, making product demo videos, and documenting workflows for training materials. The recording uses your browser's built-in MediaRecorder API for efficient capture with minimal CPU overhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. This tool uses the browser's built-in Screen Capture API (getDisplayMedia). It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other modern browsers without any extensions.

Can I record with audio?

Yes. You can include microphone audio for narration. System audio capture depends on your browser and OS — Chrome on Windows and macOS supports it when sharing a tab.

What format is the recording?

Recordings are saved as WebM (VP8/VP9 video with Opus audio), which is the native format for browser MediaRecorder. Use our WebM to MP4 tool if you need MP4.

Is there a recording time limit?

No built-in limit. Recording length is only constrained by your device's available memory and disk space. Very long recordings (30+ minutes) may use significant memory.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
