About Audio Recorder

A voice recorder that needs nothing installed and sends nothing anywhere. Pick a microphone, press Start Recording, and the browser asks for permission the way it does for any site; a level meter shows what it is actually hearing, so you find out that the wrong input is selected while you are still setting up rather than afterwards. Pause and resume are real — they call the recorder's own pause and resume — and Stop and save ends the take and offers it back for playback and download. The one thing this page will not do is pretend to be something it is not. There is no encoder on it at all. What you download is exactly what your browser's MediaRecorder wrote, and the page names that format after the fact rather than promising one in advance: in Chrome, Edge and Firefox that is normally Opus in a WebM container, and in a browser that supports none of the WebM forms it is whatever it does support, with the file extension following the container rather than a hopeful default. It is not an MP3, and no free browser recorder that claims to hand you one is doing it without a second encoding step. If you need MP3, record here and convert afterwards. The elapsed time on screen is this page's own clock rather than a property of the file: a recording is written in one-second chunks and carries no duration header, so some players show no length until they have read the whole thing. Recordings are limited only by your device's memory, and nothing is uploaded — the audio exists in this tab and in the file you save.

Questions

Is the recording an MP3?

No, and this page will not pretend otherwise. There is no encoder on it at all — what you download is exactly what your browser's MediaRecorder wrote, which in Chrome, Edge and Firefox is normally Opus in a WebM container. The page names the format after the fact rather than promising one in advance. If you need MP3, record here and convert afterwards.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It uses the browser's built-in getUserMedia and MediaRecorder APIs, so it works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other modern browsers with no extension and no account.

Why is my microphone list empty or unnamed?

Browsers hide the device list until a page has been allowed to use a microphone once. Start a recording, allow access, and the real names appear in the picker. Until then the tool records with the browser's default input, which still works.

Is there a time limit?

No built-in limit. Length is bounded by your device's memory, since the clip is held in this tab until you download it. Very long takes use a lot of it.

Why does my player show no length for the file?

The file is written in one-second chunks and carries no duration header, so some players show nothing until they have read the whole thing. The elapsed time on this page is its own clock, not something read out of the file.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
