About Webcam Recorder
A camera recorder that needs no extension, no desktop software and no account, and that sends nothing anywhere. Pick a camera, decide whether to include microphone audio, and press Start Recording; the browser asks for permission the way it does for any site, the live preview appears as the recording starts rather than before it, and pause and resume work on the recorder itself. On a phone the Front and Rear choice picks between the cameras, which is what facingMode is for; most desktop webcams report no facing at all, so it changes nothing there, and it is ignored entirely once you name a specific camera. Camera and microphone are asked for in the same call, so turning the microphone off means the browser never requests it — this page cannot record you without also having asked. The device list is worth one note: browsers hide camera names until a page has been allowed to use one, so the picker may show a count without names until the first recording, after which the real names appear. What you download is exactly what your browser's MediaRecorder wrote, and the page names that format after the fact rather than promising one: normally VP9 or VP8 with Opus in a WebM container, and MP4 in a browser that supports none of the WebM forms, with the file extension following the container. If you need MP4 specifically, the WebM to MP4 tool converts it afterwards. The elapsed time is this page's own clock rather than a property of the file — a recording is written in one-second chunks and carries no duration header, so some players show no length until they have read the whole thing. Length is limited only by your device's memory.
Questions
Do I need an extension or an account?
Neither. It uses the browser's built-in getUserMedia and MediaRecorder APIs, so it works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other modern browsers with nothing installed.
What format is the recording?
Whatever your browser's recorder wrote — normally VP9 or VP8 video with Opus audio in a WebM container, and MP4 in a browser that supports none of the WebM forms. The page names the format after the fact rather than promising one, and the file extension follows the container. Use the WebM to MP4 tool if you need MP4 specifically.
Can I record without the microphone?
Yes — untick Include microphone audio before you start. The camera and microphone are asked for in the same call, so turning it off means the browser never requests the microphone at all.
What does the Front and Rear choice do?
On a phone it picks between the front and rear camera. Most desktop webcams report no facing at all, so it changes nothing there, and it is ignored entirely once you name a specific camera in the picker above it.
Why is my camera list empty or unnamed?
Browsers hide camera names until a page has been allowed to use one. Start a recording, allow access, and the real names appear in the picker. Until then the tool records with the browser's default camera, which still works.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
