Compress Image to Target Size
Compress Image to Any Target Size — Free & Private
Type any KB target from 10 to 10,240 — 200 KB is only the preloaded default — and the search finds the best quality that fits.
About Compress Image to Target Size
Every other page on this ladder preloads a specific number; this one is for the limit those pages don't cover. The target field accepts anything from 10 KB to 10,240 KB (10 MB) — type the exact figure a form demands, or tap one of the 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, or 1 MB presets. The page opens with 200 KB preloaded purely so the field isn't empty: it is a starting point, not a limit, and any target you type replaces it. Under the hood a binary search runs up to ten encode passes toward the highest quality at or under your target, stopping once a result lands within 5% of the ceiling. If quality alone cannot reach a small target, the image is scaled down in bounded steps — never below 64 px on the longest side — and the result reports the new dimensions whenever that happens. If nothing beats your original, the original comes back unchanged. Opaque images come out as JPG, transparent ones as WebP. All processing happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded to any server.
Questions
What targets can I enter?
Anything from 10 KB to 10,240 KB (10 MB), typed directly into the size field. The 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, and 1 MB presets are one-tap shortcuts to the common ceilings.
Why does the page open at 200 KB?
It's only a preloaded default so the field isn't empty — not a recommendation and not a limit. Type your form's exact figure over it and that number drives the run.
How close to my target will the result be?
At or just under it, never over when the target is reachable — the quality search stops refining once it lands within 5% of the ceiling. A file already under your target at full quality simply stays smaller.
What happens if I enter a very small target?
Quality is lowered first; when that can't get there, the image is scaled down in bounded steps — 50% to 90% at a time, never below 64 px on the longest side — and the result reports the new dimensions. If even the floor can't reach it, you get the smallest file the engine managed.
Which formats can I upload?
JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and BMP. Opaque images come out as JPG because it hits byte targets most reliably; images with transparency are saved as WebP so the transparency survives.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
