About Image Cropper
This interactive image cropper lets you select exactly the area you want to keep with a visual drag-and-drop interface. Drag the crop handles to adjust the selection, or choose an aspect ratio preset — Free, 1:1 (perfect squares for profile photos), 4:3 (standard photos), 16:9 (widescreen and presentations), or 3:2 (classic photography). You can also rotate the image before cropping to straighten tilted photos or create a different composition. The result is saved at full resolution in the format you choose — PNG by default, or JPG or WebP with a quality slider — preserving all the detail in your selected area. PNG and WebP both carry an alpha channel, so the transparent corners a rotated crop leaves stay transparent; JPG cannot, so those areas are filled with white before encoding, and the result says so when that has happened. Common use cases include cropping photos for social media profiles, extracting a specific section from a screenshot, preparing product images with consistent dimensions, and removing unwanted edges from scanned documents. The tool supports JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, and GIF input formats. Questions
How do I crop to a specific aspect ratio?
Click one of the aspect ratio buttons (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2) above the crop area. The crop selection will lock to that ratio. Choose 'Free' to crop without any ratio constraint.
Can I rotate the image before cropping?
Yes! Use the rotation slider below the crop area to rotate the image from -180° to 180°. The crop area adjusts automatically.
What format is the cropped image saved in?
Whichever of PNG, JPG and WebP you pick under FORMAT. PNG is the default: lossless, and it keeps transparency. JPG and WebP are re-encoded and add a quality slider. The OUTPUT panel's Format row is read back off the file you are about to download, so it can never disagree with the extension on the button.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
On PNG, no — the pixels you keep are taken from the image at its full resolution and saved losslessly, so no new compression artifacts are added. The trade-off is size: a PNG crop of a JPG photo can be larger in bytes than the original file even though it holds fewer pixels. Choose JPG or WebP and the crop is re-encoded at the quality you set, which is smaller but does add compression.
Why does my cropped image have transparent corners?
That happens when you rotate before cropping — any part of the crop box the rotated image no longer covers is left transparent. PNG and WebP keep it that way. JPG cannot store an alpha channel, so those areas come back white instead, and the result says when that happened. Pull the crop box fully inside the rotated image if you want neither.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
