About Circle Image Cropper
This tool cuts a circle out of an image and leaves everything outside it transparent. Drop a picture in, set the Diameter slider — it is measured against the shorter edge, so 100% is the largest circle the picture can hold — and use the Horizontal and Vertical controls to move that circle over the part you want. The ring drawn on the preview is computed from the same three numbers the engine is sent, so what you position is what gets cut. Output is PNG or WebP and deliberately nothing else: JPEG has no alpha channel, so a circle written as a JPEG is a circle painted on a white square, which is not what anyone means. One thing worth knowing before you download: the file is still a rectangle. Every raster image format is. The corners are transparent rather than absent, so the result looks like a circle wherever transparency is honoured — a website, a slide, a profile picture that gets masked round anyway — and like a square on a viewer that paints its own background behind it. Common uses are round avatars, circular logos, badge images and stickers. Everything runs in this tab: the picture is decoded, drawn and re-encoded on your own machine, and nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Why is there no JPG option?
Because a JPEG cannot store transparency. The whole point of a circular crop is that the corners are empty, and a JPEG would fill them with white — you would get a circle painted on a white square. PNG and WebP both carry an alpha channel, so those are the two formats offered.
Is the file I download actually circular?
No, and no tool can make it so: every raster image format is a rectangle. What you get is a square image whose corners are fully transparent. It reads as a circle anywhere transparency is honoured — a web page, a slide, an app that masks avatars — and as a square on a viewer that paints its own background behind the image.
How do I crop a circle that is not in the middle?
Lower the Diameter slider first — that creates slack — then use the Horizontal and Vertical sliders to move the circle within it. Each slider's readout shows the result in pixels. At 100% diameter the circle already spans the shorter edge, so it can only move along the longer one, and the slider that cannot move anything is disabled rather than left to slide with no effect.
Can I use the result as a profile picture?
Yes. Save it as PNG or WebP and upload it wherever you need it. Many apps mask avatars to a circle themselves, in which case a square crop would have worked too — but a pre-cut circle is what you want for anywhere that does not, such as a slide deck, a document or an email signature.
Does cropping to a circle reduce image quality?
The pixels inside the circle are taken at full resolution, and PNG output is lossless from that point on. What does cost something is the decode-and-re-encode this tool has to do: if your source was a JPEG, the crop is one more generation away from the original. Saving as PNG stops any further loss.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
