About MP4 to MOV

Some Apple software is happier with a .mov extension than a .mp4 — older Final Cut and iMovie import paths, a few QuickTime workflows, and the occasional piece of broadcast software that keys off the container rather than the codec. Because MP4 and MOV are both ISO base media containers built from the same box structure, moving between them does not touch the video at all: the compressed H.264 or H.265 stream and its audio are copied straight into the new wrapper. The run takes milliseconds regardless of how long the clip is, and the result is bit-for-bit the same picture and sound — this is a container swap, not a conversion. The tool reads the file's streams first and shows you what it found, so the claim that nothing was re-encoded is made after the decision rather than before it. If a stream turns up that QuickTime's container cannot hold, you are told before the run rather than handed a file that fails to open. FFmpeg runs as WebAssembly inside the tab; the video is never uploaded anywhere.

Questions

Is anything re-encoded?

No. MP4 and MOV are both ISO base media containers built from the same box structure, so the video and audio streams move from one to the other unchanged. The picture that comes out is bit for bit the picture that went in.

Why would I want a MOV instead of an MP4?

Mostly Apple software that keys off the container rather than the codec — some Final Cut and iMovie import paths, a few QuickTime and broadcast workflows. If your software opens MP4 happily, there is no reason to convert.

Why is the output a slightly different size?

The two containers keep their bookkeeping — indexes, track headers, chapter data — a little differently, so the wrapper around the video changes size even though the video does not. On our test clip the file grew by under a kilobyte.

Can I convert an H.265 MP4?

Yes. MOV holds H.265 as readily as MP4 does, so the stream is copied across as-is. Note that this does not make an H.265 file more compatible — it is the same video in a different box, and anything that could not decode it before still cannot.

What is the maximum file size?

1.5 GB, enforced before the conversion starts. The rewrapped output has to be held in the tab, and a browser cannot hold much more than that in one file.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
