Remove Audio from Video Online — Free Video Muter
Strip the audio track out of a video without re-encoding the picture.
About Mute Video
Sometimes the audio is the problem: background chatter on a clip you want to post, copyrighted music that will get a video muted or taken down anyway, a screen recording that caught more of the room than you meant it to, or footage headed for an edit that will get its own soundtrack later. Muting a video does not require re-encoding it. The audio track is simply left out of the new file while the compressed video stream is copied across byte for byte — so the output is the same resolution, the same bitrate and the same picture as the source, just without the sound. On a short clip the whole operation is a few milliseconds, and it stays fast on long ones because no frame is ever decoded. The file keeps its original container, so a muted MP4 is still an MP4 and drops into the same places the original did. If you want the audio rather than the video, the MP4 to MP3 tool pulls the track out instead of discarding it. FFmpeg runs as WebAssembly in the tab; nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Is the video re-encoded when the audio is removed?
No. The audio track is simply left out of the new file while the compressed video stream is copied across byte for byte. Same resolution, same bitrate, same picture — measured at about 7 milliseconds on our test clip.
Can I get the audio back afterwards?
Not from the muted file — the track is gone, not hidden. Keep your original if you might want the sound later. If you want to save the audio separately before muting, the MP4 to MP3 tool extracts it.
What format is the output?
The same container you put in. A muted MP4 is still an MP4, a muted MOV is still a MOV — only the audio track is missing, so the file drops into exactly the same places the original did.
Can I remove only one of several audio tracks?
No. This tool strips the audio entirely; there is no per-track selection. That keeps the operation a single stream copy, which is what makes it instant and lossless.
How large a video can I mute?
Up to 1.5 GB. The muted copy has to be held in the browser tab, so the same stream-copy ceiling applies here as on the trimmer.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
