About Crop PDF

Wide margins, a scanner's black border, a slide deck with a footer nobody needs — cropping is how a PDF stops wasting the page. This tool renders your first page with PDF.js and puts a draggable frame over it. Move and resize the frame by its handles, or lock it to a ratio first: Free, 1:1, A4, 4:3 or 16:9. The strip under the page reports the frame's size in points and in millimetres as you drag, so you can hit a real measurement rather than eyeballing it, and Reset crop frame puts it back. The frame you set on page one is offered to every page in the document and clamped to each page's own visible area, so a file whose pages are not all the same size crops per page instead of producing broken sheets. Where the frame only partly covers a page, that page keeps the part that fits. Where it misses a page altogether — trimming a top band off a portrait document that also contains a landscape page, say — that page is left at its original size rather than reduced to an empty sheet, and nothing on screen calls that out, so check a mixed-size file before you rely on the result. What actually changes is the page geometry: both the crop box and the media box are rewritten to the rectangle you drew, which is what makes the new size stick in every viewer and on paper. The content is never scaled, moved or re-encoded — text stays selectable, images keep their pixels, and a page that was rotated stays rotated. One thing to be clear about, because it is the difference between a smaller page and a safe one: cropping hides content, it does not remove it. The marks outside your frame are still in the file, and any tool that widens the boxes back out gets them back. If the point is that nobody can ever see something, cropping is not redaction and this is not a redaction tool.

Questions

Does cropping delete the content outside the frame?

No — and this is the one thing worth understanding before cropping anything sensitive. Cropping rewrites the page rectangles so a reader draws less of the page. Everything outside the frame is still in the file, and any tool that widens those rectangles back out gets it back. Cropping is not redaction, and this site has no redaction tool.

Can I crop each page differently?

No. You set one frame on page one and it is used for every page, clamped to each page's own visible area — so in a file whose pages are not all the same size, a page the frame only partly covers keeps the part that fits rather than ending up with a broken box. A page the frame does not reach at all is the case to watch: it is left uncropped at its original size rather than reduced to an empty sheet, and nothing on screen singles it out. Trimming a top band off a portrait document that also holds a landscape page will do it.

Does cropping make the PDF smaller on disk?

Usually not by much. Nothing is deleted — the content outside the frame is still stored — so only the page geometry changes. If you need a smaller file, run the result through Compress PDF, which does structural work on the file itself.

Will the text still be selectable after cropping?

Yes. The content is never scaled, moved, rasterised or re-encoded; only the page boxes change. Text stays real text, images keep their exact pixels, and a rotated page stays rotated.

What do the numbers under the page mean?

They are the live size of the crop frame — in PDF points (72 to the inch) and in millimetres — plus page one's current size for comparison. They update as you drag, so you can hit a real measurement instead of eyeballing it.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
