JPG bytes are embedded without re-encoding and PNGs are repacked losslessly; WebP and HEIC are decoded in your browser and re-encoded — lossless PNG where an image carries transparency, JPEG at quality 0.92 where it is opaque — and every page of a multi-page TIFF becomes its own PDF page, with the true page count shown before you convert. Images are centered on each page, scaled to fit within the margins while preserving aspect ratio, and never enlarged past their natural size. What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and TIFF are all accepted. JPG and PNG go into the PDF without a lossy re-encode; WebP and HEIC are decoded in your browser and re-encoded as PNG (when transparent) or JPEG at quality 0.92 (when opaque), and every page of a multi-page TIFF becomes its own PDF page.
Can I choose the page size?
Yes. Choose between A4, US Letter, or 'Fit to Image' which makes each page exactly the size of the image.
Are images stretched to fill the page?
No. Images are scaled proportionally to fit within the page margins while maintaining their aspect ratio.
Do my images lose quality when they become a PDF?
JPG data is embedded byte-for-byte without re-encoding, and 8-bit PNGs are decoded and repacked losslessly (a rare 16-bit PNG is reduced to 8 bits per channel, with a notice). WebP, HEIC, and TIFF inputs are re-encoded on the way in: losslessly to PNG when they carry transparency, to JPEG at quality 0.92 when they are opaque — a slight and usually invisible cost.
Why is there white space around my image?
A4 and Letter pages keep a 40-point margin (about 14 mm) with the image centered inside it, and images are never enlarged past their natural size. Choose 'Fit' instead — each page then matches its image's exact dimensions, edge to edge.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
