About PDF to PNG
PNG is the right output when a PDF page has to survive as pixels without losing anything — sharp text, thin rules, line art, screenshots headed for documentation. This tool renders every page of your PDF with PDF.js, the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs, and encodes each page as a lossless PNG. Nothing is uploaded: the rendering and the encoding both run in your browser, which matters when the document is a contract, a medical record, or anything else you would rather not hand to a server. The scale slider controls the output resolution — 2× is the default and already crisp on screen; 4× doubles the pixel dimensions again for print or high-DPI displays. Expect PNG files to be noticeably larger than the JPG output of our PDF to JPG tool; that is the price of lossless — every character edge stays exactly as rendered, with none of JPG's compression ringing around text. There is no quality slider on this page because PNG has nothing to trade away. Each page becomes its own numbered PNG, downloadable individually from the page deck or all at once as a ZIP named after your document. The JPG and WebP outputs stay one toggle away on the same tool.
Questions
Why choose PNG over JPG for PDF pages?
PNG is lossless — text edges, thin lines, and flat colors come out exactly as rendered, with none of the compression artifacts JPG introduces around sharp detail. The trade-off is size: a text-heavy page as PNG is usually several times larger than the same page as a JPG.
Why is there no quality slider on this page?
PNG has no quality dial to turn — the encode is lossless, so there is nothing to trade away. The control that changes output size here is the scale slider; switch the format toggle to JPG or WebP if you want lossy compression with a quality setting.
What resolution do the PNGs come out at?
Pages render at 2× scale by default, which is crisp for screen use, and the slider goes up to 4× for print or high-DPI displays. At 4× a physically large page can exceed the browser's canvas limits — the error names the exact pixel dimensions it attempted, and lowering the scale fixes it.
How do I download all the pages?
Each page becomes page-1.png, page-2.png, and so on. Click a tile in the deck to save one page, or use Download all (ZIP) — the archive is named after your document, so report.pdf comes down as report-pages.zip.
Is this a different tool from PDF to JPG?
Same renderer, different default: this page preselects PNG output, and the JPG and WebP toggles are right there if you change your mind. Nothing else differs — same scale control, same ZIP delivery.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Transmute processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device — there is no server, no upload, no cloud processing.
